What Is The PS5 GPU Equivalent?

What Is The PS5 GPU Equivalent?

Benchmarks show that the PS5’s GPU is equivalent to Nvidia’s RTX2070 and AMD’s RX6600 XT. 

When it comes to hardware, we gamers take our frames per second very seriously – after all, it sets us up for better performance, plus it turns our gaming sessions from a good one to a great one!

Directly comparing consoles and PC hardware is not absolute, but we can still compare how well they run our favorite games. 

How Does The PS5 GPU Compare With Nvidia’s RTX2070?

Benchmarks tests compared the PS5 GPU via split-screen to showcase the real-time FPS difference with Nvidia’s RTX2070. Tests included:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 @ 2160p 4K UHD. Both GPUs showed similar results, averaging at around 56 FPS. They both pulled ahead during certain parts of the benchmark, leaving an average frame difference of 4 – 7 frames between them. 
  • Doom Eternal @ 2160p 4K UHD. The PS5 GPU proved to have a much more stable FPS, seldom dropping below 110 FPS. It averaged 135 FPS. The RTX2070 fluctuated between 20 – 30 frames less throughout the benchmark, averaging 110 FPS.  
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 @ 2160P 4K UHD. The PS5 GPU pulled ahead throughout the benchmark by 10 – 15 frames, averaging 73 FPS. The RTX2070 averaged around 65 FPS, sometimes meeting the PS5 in the middle but dropping back down to around 62 – 66 FPS. 
  • Grand Theft Auto V @ 2160p 4K UHD. The first part of the benchmark flies a plane and has the RTX2070 pushing around 35 – 40 more FPS than the PS5 GPU, averaging 105 FPS. The PS5 GPU averaged 65 FPS. The driving test closed the gap slightly, but the RTX2070 still got 10 – 15 frames more than the PS5 GPU. 
  • Assassins Creed Odyssey @ 2160p 4K UHD. Both GPUs displayed very similar performances throughout the benchmark, with a frame difference of 3 – 5. The RX2070 pulled ahead very slightly, averaging 66 FPS, while the PS5 GPU averaged 62 FPS. 

Overall, benchmarks revealed that the PS5 GPU and Nvidia RTX2070 perform similarly in open-world games like Cyberpunk 2077, Grandtheft Auto, and Assassins Creed Odyssey that have view distance requirements. 

Doom Eternal can have many particle effects showing on the screen at one time, and the PS5 GPU does a much better job than the RTX2070. In the same breath, the RTX2070 proved far better at rending a lot of graphics simultaneously, as with the flying test in Grand Theft Auto V. 

How Does The PS5 GPU Compare With AMD’s RX6600 XT?

Benchmark tests also compared the PS5 GPU to AMD’s RX6600 XT. The tests included:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 @ 1080p Ultra. The PS5 GPU fluctuated between 55 – 65 frames, averaging 60 FPS. The RX6600 XT remained ahead by 5 – 10 frames throughout the test and got an average of 68 frames. 
  • Doom Eternal @ 1080p Ultra. The PS5 GPU retained a comfortable average of 135 frames, maxing at 144 FPS. The RX6600 XT did substantially better, averaging 160 FPS, giving it about 20 – 30 FPS more than the PS5 GPU. 
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 @ 1080p Ultra. The PS5 GPU performed slightly better than the RX6600 XT, averaging 4 – 6 frames more throughout the benchmark. The PSU5 GPU averaged about 68 FPS, while AMD’s RX6600 XT got an average of 63 FPS. 
  • Grand Theft Auto V @ 1080p Ultra. The flight test revealed the RX6600 XT had more than double the FPS of the PS5 GPU, averaging 125 FPS, while the PS5 GPU averaged 65 FPS. During the driving test, the RX6600 XT remained far ahead with an average of 120 FPS and the PS5 GPU with 80 FPS. The average frame difference was 35 FPS. 
  • Assassins Creed Odyssey @ 1080 Ultra. The RTX6600 XT averaged a comfortable 72 FPS throughout the benchmark, while the PS5 GPU got 10 – 12 frames less, averaging 60 FPS. 

Overall, AMD’s RX6600 XT performed all of the games, and the comparison was closer when comparing open-world games that required the GPUs to render a lot of graphics simultaneously. The PS5 GPU performed better in some cases, while the RX6600 XT pulled ahead in others. 

When it came to rendering many particle effects at once, like with Doom Eternal, the RX6600 XT proved to be more stable. Furthermore, quickly rendering graphics like in the flying test in Grand Theft Auto V proved difficult for the PS5 GPU but effortless for the RX6600 XT. 

The PS5 GPU Is Most Similar To AMD GPUs

If you don’t know already, Sony’s graphics card utilizes AMD technology. Why not Nvidia? It’s possible that while Sony was developing the hardware standard, AMD offered a better rate on bulk buy orders than NVidia.

Otherwise, AMD has always had a reputation for the best value for money for their GPUs. Even though they may not compete with Intel chips in raw power, they were the smart business choice and sufficient for Sony’s gaming standard. 

Furthermore, Sony sells its consoles at a loss. Due to console hardware’s high manufacturing cost, they make a loss on the sale of their consoles but rely on game sales and subscriptions to make up for the loss in revenue.  

On the other hand, PCs have a lot more gaming potential, but that’s also why they are much more expensive even though they have similar GPU technology.


The PS5 GPU is equivalent to Nvidia’s RTX2070 and AMD’s RX6600 XT. The PSU GPU performs pretty evenly in games that require a lot of rending simultaneously, like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassins Creed Odyssey. Overall, the frame difference is 10 – 12 frames. 

However, it tends to fall behind when there are many particle effects on the screen, like Grand Theft Auto V and Doom Eternal. The overall frame difference is an average of 30 FPS.
